New 320 kV microfocus X-ray tube for industrial computed tomography – maximum precision meets maximum performance

X-RAY WorX introduces the new XWT-320 -CT Plus open-type microfocus X-ray tube designed for high-power, high-energy industrial computed tomography (CT). The system addresses the growing demand for high spatial resolution, long-term stability, and efficient scan times in industrial CT—particularly for dense and highly absorbent components.

The new XWT-320 -CT Plus X-ray tube operates at accelerating voltages of up to 320 kV with target powers of up to 450 W, enabling reliable inspection of challenging samples such as lithium-ion battery modules, additively manufactured nickel-based alloys, and complex multi-material assemblies. With a minimum focus-to-object distance (FOD) of just 8 mm, the tube enables high geometric magnification and excellent image detail even for complex components. In the high-energy range from 225 to 320 kV, the system achieves a JIMA resolution of 4 µm × 4 µm, setting a new benchmark for open microfocus X-ray systems at elevated photon energies.

A key innovation of the XWT-320-CT Plus include optimized electron optics and a newly developed tube-head concept. Due to the redesigned electron optics, the X-ray tube achieves an almost perfectly linear relationship between the magnetic field (focus coil current) and the acceleration voltage over the entire operating range. This results in improved stability at 300 kV – 320 kV and significantly reduced heat generation within the focusing unit in the electron optics. In combination with active cooling of critical X-ray tube components, thermally induced focal-spot drift is minimized to the lowest possible level.

Flexible collimator options are available to support a wide range of inspection tasks. A 40° × 40° square cone collimator is provided as standard, with an optional extension to 40° × 80°, allowing optimal adaptation of the field of view to different CT geometries and sample sizes.

In summary, the XWT-320-CT Plus microfocus X-ray tube combines high photon energy with exceptional precision and resolution—both at low power and at maximum target power during demanding, long-duration CT measurements. The unique combination of minimal FOD, continuously adjustable focal-spot size, and thermally stabilized electron optics delivers an outstanding balance of penetration capability, resolution, and scan efficiency.
